In the picturesque city of Rethymno, located on the island of Crete, I visited an exhibition “What You Wear Is What You Are”, held at the Museum of Modern Art in Crete. It was organized by three friends inspired by a deep interest in both art and fashion industries.

The main goal of this exposition is to create a lively dialogue between artistic expressions and global trends in fashion. The exhibition features works from about three dozen contemporary authors, including well-known Greek masters, as well as representatives of international scenes.

A central theme highlights the close interconnection between creativity in art and design with current political and social realities. Special attention is given to honoring Sophia Kokosalaki, an influential figure in world fashion whose life was closely linked to the development of Greek and international fashion movements. She designed costumes for the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympics in 2004, collaborated with brands such as Diesel, Ruffo Research, and Hermès, received awards like Elle Designer, Art Foundation Award for Fashion, New Generation Designer, and honors from magazines Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and W.

The exhibition showcases combinations of traditional motifs from Greece’s cultural heritage and innovative approaches of today: patterned fabrics, intricate embroidery, elaborate knots, refined draping, sculptural forms.
